Purpose
The annual statement will be generated each year.
It will summarise:
- Any infection transmission incidents and action taken (these will be reported in accordance with our Significant Event procedure)
- The annual infection control audit summary and actions undertaken
- Control risk assessments undertaken
- Details of staff training (both as part of induction and annual training) with regards to infection prevention & control
- Details of infection control advise to patients
- Any review and update of policies, procedures and guidelines
Background
Chapel Row Surgery lead for infection prevention control is Paul Gomm, practice manager who is supported by Jane Willey, practice nurse and Debra Pomfret, practice administrator.
This team keep updated with infection prevention & control practices and share necessary information with staff and patients throughout the year.
Significant events
In the past year 1st January 2020 to 31st December 2020 there has been 1 significant events that related to infection prevention & control.
Risk assessment
The significant event was risk assessed during practice discussions and the agreed outcomes were then implemented. Details are held on the infection control policy folder.
Covid 19
The way in which the surgery would operate following the initial lockdown period in March 2020 was risk assessed and guideline drawn up. These were reviewed and amended as required during the remainder of the year.
Audits
An infection prevention and control audit was carried out in June 2020 together with ingoing covid updates.
The next full audit will take place in 2021.
A complete set of clinical room audits was undertaken in June 2020 by practice nurse Jane Willey under strict covid guidelines and the findings relayed to all staff members.
A copy of this is held on a separate infection control lead file kept with the Infection control policy file.
Staff training
2 new staff joined this surgery in the 12 month period covered by this statement and received infection control and hand-washing training within 1 week of employment.
100% of the practice nursing and phlebotomy staff completed their annual infection prevention & control update training on-line in 2020 (previous training carried out in 2019).
96% of the practice non-clinical staff completed their annual infection prevention & control update training on-line in 2020 (previous training carried out in 2019).
A new infection control lead nurse was appointed in October 2020 – Jintana Loss.
An introductory virtual training session with the new infection control lead nurse was attended by Jane Willey on 10 December 2020, with future sessions scheduled to take place in 2021.
Infection control advice to patients
Patients are encouraged to use the alcohol hand gel/sanitiser dispensers that are available throughout the surgery and adhere to any extra guidelines introduced by the surgery in response to the covid 19 pandemic.

Policies, procedures and guidelines
Documents related to infection prevention & control are reviewed in line with national and local guidance changes and will be updated yearly (or sooner in the event on new guidance). Infection control and prevention will be added to the clinical meeting agenda annually.
